In 1516, D. Fernando Coutinho, Bishop of Silves, ordered the construction of a monastery at Cabo de São Vicente, in Sagres, and to protect the place and the numerous pilgrims who sought it, a fortification was also ordered, the Fort of S. Vincent.
In 1846 the space of the former convent was converted into a lighthouse, due to the place being an important point of reference for maritime routes.
Currently, the Cabo de S. Vicente Lighthouse is considered one of the longest range lighthouses in Europe, with rotating beams of light that can be visible up to 32 miles away, also equipped with an audible signal.
